Report on National Webinar on “Development of Tools and Techniques for Assessment of Prakriti in Children”

The national webinar was jointly organized by Department of Kaumarbhritya (Ayurveda Pediatrics) and Kriya Sharir (Ayurveda Physiology), Mahatma Gandhi Ayurved College, Hospital and Research Centre, Salod, Wardha, under the ambit of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, NAAC A+, Deemed to be University and was conducted on 12 January 2021. A total of 330 participants were registered in the webinar and more than 149 participants attended the full webinar on Zoom meeting platform [Figure 1] and [Figure 2].

The program was started with Dhanvantaristavan (Prayers of Lord Dhanwantari) video after that pretest was conduction. Later welcome and introductory speech was given by Dr. Renu Bharat Rathi, Organizing Chairman and Professor, Department of Kaumarbhritya. She welcomed the chief guest and Registrar of the University Dr. Babaji Ghewade, Dr. Vaishali Kuchewar, Dean, MGACHRC, Dr. K. Lakshmeesh Upadya, Medical Superintendent and Professor, Department of Kaurmarbhritya, Yennapoya Ayurved College and Hospital, Manglore and Dr. Bhavna Prasher, Senior Scientist of Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, (CSIR), Delhi. In her speech, she emphasized on Prakriti (State of individuals in natural forms) importance. Whenever there is alteration in this natural form of Doshaj (body natural constituents that are capable to maintain state of equilibrium/health or disease) balance, diseases manifest. Therefore, a good knowledge of prakriti is not only essential to predict the diagnosis but also for the treatment of diseases. It helps in the career counseling, sports choice, better deal with behavioral problems, and chronic ailments by means of guiding Pathya-apathya (Do’s –Don’t of diet and lifestyle) including prediction of prognosis. Children are in continuous maturation phase with disease susceptible nature, so it is needful to develop a structured, standard, and clinically validated tool for Prakriti assessment in them. She revealed that many scholars are working in this regard to clinically validate the different tools and techniques by correlation of Prakriti phenotype classification with genome analysis.

The objectives of the webinar were as follows:

  1. To develop tools and techniques of Prakriti assessment in children.


  2. To authenticate it clinically in a standard, measurable mode.


  3. To assess the role of Prakriti assessment in treatment protocols, Pathya-Apathya, carrier counseling and selection of carrier from childhood.


  4. To develop psychosocial tools of Prakriti assessment in newborn and


  5. To modify the criteria of Prakriti assessment in children from adults.


In the presidential talk by Hon’ble Dr. Ghewade, he highlighted on the implementation of Ayurveda in day today life as it is not only beneficial in diseased condition to cure them but also in healthy state too. In both the conditions, Prakriti play the significant role; therefore, it is mandatory to determine Prakriti assessment in children also. He took the brief review on need of technology innovations in Ayurveda also for the sake of healthy mankind. There is a software named “Prakriti Vichaya” module of AyuSoft by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). He emphasized the need to validate the same for children too. At the end of the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Kunal Chandankhede, Organizing Secretary, gave vote of Thanks and inaugural ceremony was anchored by Dr. Priyanka Shelotkar, Asst Prof. in Department of Kaumarbhritya.

The Plenary session was started with the expert talk on “Psychosocial consideration of Prakriti assessment in newborn” by Dr. Upadya. He highlighted the ways of Prakriti assessment in newborn like physical built-anthropometry, maturity; physiological functions-sleep, hunger etc., environmental, behavioral-happy or sad/agitated state, amount of cry etc. He emphasized that Prakriti cannot be completely changed once formed at embryo stage but can be modified partially. The idiosyncrasy plays an important role in differentiating and visualizing the somatic and psychic considerations. There is minimal role of physical characters as continue change due to maturation phase so clinical psychosomatic approach plays vital role. The chair person was Dr. Pradnya Dandekar, Academic Dean, Professor and Head of Kriya Sharir (Ayurveda Physiology) Department, she gave her expert opinon as the chairperson of the session. Another guest speaker Dr. Bhavana Prasher, Senior Scientist of CSIR, Delhi, delivered a speech on the topic “Prakriti assessment in children, how and why?” She highlighted various factors responsible for Prakriti assessment such as features of anatomical, physiological, socio-cultural, Bala (energy level for doing work) variations, activities, communication ability, etc. Dr. Srihari, Vice Dean, chaired the session and shared his opinion on the guest speakers talk. At the end of the plenary session, query session was conducted and speakers have given the satisfactory answers to viewers. In post lunch session, there was paper and poster presentation conducted.

At the end of the webinar, post-test was conducted using Google form. Dr. Renu Rathi has presented the summary of the day-long webinar and declared the prizes to winners of paper and poster presentation. The total paper presenters were 31; out of them, 19 are PhD scholars and 12 are students (under and postgraduate). In the faculty category, Dr. Vidya Bhushan Pandey, Asst. Prof., GAC, Bilaspur, achieved first place as the best presenter and secondnd place was achived by Dr. Purvi Vyas, Assoc. Prof., J.S. Ayurved College, Nadiad, Gujrat. In student’s category, Dr Keshav Kayande was the winner from Department of Kaumarbhritya, Yashwant Ayurved College, Kodoli, Maharashtra. Total posters presented were 21 and Dr. Jyothy KB, Head and Associate Professor of Department of Kaumarabhritya, Mahatma Gandhi Ayurved College, Hospital & Research Centre, Wardha, Maharashtra, grabbed the first prize in the category of faculty in Poster presentation.

Dean Dr. Vaishali Kuchewar, Dr. Srihari S, Vice Administration, Dean Academics, Dr. Dandekar and Vice Dean Academics, Dr. Gaurav Sawarkar, Dr. Renu Rathi, as Organizing Chairman, Dr. Kunal Chandankhede as Organizing Secretary and our colleagues Dr. Priyanka Shelotkar, Dr. Jagruti Chaple (Dawle) and Dr. Trupti Deshmukh gave their contribution for making the program successful. Vote of thanks and congratulations wishes to winners were given at the end of the national webinar with declaration of its end. Category wise E-certificates were given to all delegates, presenters, winners and speakers. The pretest average was 1.89 and post-test average was 9.17. The formula for average learning gain is post-test minus pretest divided by maximum marks of the test into 100 and it came 72.8%
