NAMASTE Portal: A standard reference repository for Ayurveda terminologies

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, is practiced since almost 5000 years. It has evoked upsurge interest in people all over India and the world for its potential preventive and curative measures. The increased educational and research activities have resulted into exponential growth in the publication of the scientific works in various platforms. However, the quality of publications remains a concern, especially when the literature consists of technical terminologies that have not been provided with a standardized terminology of contemporary period. This makes the acceptance and interpretation of scientific literature difficult to the global population and to personnels who do not possess any background knowledge of the science.
With the renewed support from the government of India and efforts by Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi, National AYUSH Morbidity and Standardized Terminologies Electronic Portal (NAMASTE) was launched in the year 2017. The laudable efforts put in to bring out this portal is noteworthy and is of immense help in mainstreaming Ayurveda and the scientific literatures.
The portal provides standard technical terminologies in English for the classical Ayurveda terminologies in the form of short and long definitions. This portal would be of significant help to disseminate the knowledge of Ayurveda in a language which is best understood by all.
At the time of penning this note, the portal contained 12,080 standardized Ayurveda terminologies and 2983 National Ayurveda Morbidity Codes. As the work is dynamic in nature, many more terminologies are expected to be added in the due course of time.
The Ayurveda terminologies in the portal have been divided into 10 different categories which helps the subscriber to investigate the exact words he is desirous of according to the different context.
The categories are as follows:
SAT A: Moola Bhuta Shabdha (basic and fundamental terminologies of Ayurveda)
SAT B: Sharira (structure and function—anatomical and physiological terminologies)
SAT C: Vyadhi Vinishchaya/Nidana (diagnosis and etiological factors)
SAT D: Linga (signs and symptoms)
SAT E: Rashtriya Ayurveda Rugnata Kootasanket (National Ayurveda Morbidity Codes)
SAT F: Dravyam (pharmacognosy and pharmacology)
SAT G: Aushadha Kalpana (preparation of medicine—pharmaceutics)
SAT H: Ahara Kalpana (preparation of food and beverages)
SAT I: Chikitsa (treatments)
SAT J: Swasthavritta (preventive and promotive health)
From the Year 2021, the editorial board of Journal of Indian System of Medicine has decided to incorporate the usage of NAMSATE-portal as a mandatory process while preparing of the manuscript. The Ayurveda terminologies when used for the first time in the article should have a suitable English standard terminology in brackets taken from the portal. The link to the portal has also been given in the Author’s Instruction page on the journal’s website which facilitate the authors while writing the manuscript.
